Preparing Leather Furniture Dye

Do you have a beautiful piece of leather furniture in your home that just does not match your décor any more? It’s difficult to get rid of a nice leather couch or chair, especially when it has been broken in and is extremely comfortable. Fortunately, you do not necessarily have to get rid of your leather couch or chair. Instead, you can dye the leather to match the décor of the room! Leather furniture dye is fairly easy to find, and is pretty inexpensive as well. With a little time and a little vision, you can turn your old, comfortable couch into a couch that fits your redecorated room.

You first need to prepare the leather for the dying process. Use a deglazer to remove all of the finishes that are on the leather. During this process, you will probably see the finishes coming off, as well as the color of the furniture changing. This is absolutely normal and is nothing to be alarmed about. After you have prepared the furniture, you need to prepare the dye.

Furniture leather dye needs to be mixed extremely well before it is used. Some people take the bottle, turn it upside down and shake it vigorously, other people take a small stick, such as a paint stirrer, and use it to mix things together evenly. When you first open the dye, there may be some oily substance on the top of the bottle. This is easily rectified when you stir things up. If you stir and the oil does not seem to disappear, immediately bring the dye back to the place you purchased it at. You may want to take test a piece of fabric before you start the entire dying process. If there is a piece of leather you can remove, do so, if not, try to choose a spot on the furniture that will be hidden. Simply take a little bit of the dye and apply it with a sponge or brush. If the color is what you want it to be, you can go on. If it is not, head back to the store and have a little chat with the salesman. If you can bring the sample, do so as it will make things easier. If you can’t, try to take a picture so that the salesman has an idea of what you are talking about.
